December jobs in the fruit garden
- Now is the time to prune back fruit trees to encourage fruit production. But do not prune back fruits that have stones i.e. plums, cherries until summer to prevent silver leaf fungus.
- Prune grape vines
- Lift and dive clumps of rhubarb to help renew the plants, sections from the outer plant are better than the centre.
- Apply glue bands or grease bands to the trunks of fruit trees to protect them from wingless female moths as they will climb the trees and lay their eggs in the branches.
- If your strawberry plants are over three years old replace them with new strawberry runners as the plants will harbor diseases and will not produce as much.
