How to grow and plant fruit trees
Growing fruit in the garden or allotment can be very rewarding and with tasty harvests. It can be easy to grow fruit but you need some good space and a bit of effort when it comes to pruning.
When you purchase your fruit tree it is best to buy it when it’s in it’s dormant state around November to March. As soon as you recieve your fruit tree you want to get it planted as soon as possible. If you can not plant your fruit tree yet it is best to put your fruit tree in a bucket half filled with water to help keep the roots moist. Do not leave it unplanted for over a week.
Planting your fruit tree step by step
1 Find a sunny spot to grow your tree
2 Dig in well rotted manure or compost will help the soil improve.
3 Dig a big hole for your tree which is around 2-3 times wider than the roots.
4 Hammer a stake in for the tree before you plant your fruit tree this will stop it damaging the roots.
5 Place the tree in the hole and spread out the roots
6 Make sure the tree is the depth to what it was originally planted.
7 Fasten the tree to the stake with a tree tie. Do not let the tree come into contact wth the stake.
Fill in the hole with the soil around the roots and the base and cafefully firm the soil around it.
Caring for your new fruit tree
Follow these steps to caring for your new fruit tree.
1 Water the tree with plenty of water and kept watered in the first year of planting.
2 Keep your eye on the tree ties and loosen to stop them from rubbing on the stem.
3 Remove the stake after two years.
