Spur and tip bearing fruit used to be pruned in different ways to each other. But now they are the same technique when it comes to pruning the trees.
When do I prune apple and pear trees?
You should be pruning your apple and pear trees during the months of November to the beginning of March. This is when the tree are dormant.
Aim of pruning
When it comes to pruning apples and pears it’s good to get them trained and pruned every winter beacuse if you leave them to grow out of shape and not pruned they will become less productive when growing.
What tools you need for pruning
The tools you need for pruning is a sharp pruning saw and a decent paitr of secateurs.
Step by step to pruning
1 Prune branches that are dead, damaged, diseased and dying or any that are touching and crossing each other.
2 Look for your main primary branches and shorten these by around a third to one of the buds that are facing in the correct direction that you want it to grow.
3 Do not prune the side shoots or the young laterals. These can develop fruit buds. The only time you should prune these off is if they are crossing with another branch
