Lettuce are extremely easy to grow in the UK and the rest of the world. They can be grown outdoors, in polytunnels and in coldframes.
Below you will be able to find all the information you need for growing Lettuce yourself.
Sowing and planting Lettuce
Lettuce is one of the main ingredients to a salad. If you grow them right you could be having lettuce all summer long and into the autumn. Lettuce can be grown in all types of soils it is not to fussy. The only thing you have to make sure is that the ground does not dry out too much or get waterlogged. The soil also needs to be well draining soil. Lettuce needs to be planted in a sunny position if you have somewhere warm it will grow faster.
When to Plant Lettuce
Lettuce can be planted throughout most of the year depending on the temperature. You can start sowing lettuce seeds from March right though to September. Lettuce is best grown in intervals as you do not want them to all mature at the same time and bolt.
Varieties of Lettuce
There is two types of lettuce these are loose leaf which means you can just cut of the lettuce as and when you want it. There is also the ones which you tend to see in the shops these are called hearting lettuce. – these tend to be harvested whole then you will need another plant for more lettuce.
Planting Lettuce
When planting lettuce it can be sown from March onwards. You can start lettuce seeds off in seed trays sprinkling the seed sparingly over a thin layer of compost and covering with another layer of compost. Give it a sprinkle of water and leave it somewhere warm to germinate. You can also sow the seeds straight in the ground when the weather is warmer.
Growing Lettuce
When the seeds have germinated and are big enough to handle with decent leaves on you can then transplant them from the seed trays to plant pots so the grow bigger and get more established. If you are growing them outdoors gently lift them and move them to their final growing position.
When you plant them outdoors you will need to space them around 30cm apart this is so they can make use of all the space around them. Make sure that the soil around them is kept hoed and weed free also you may want to use organic slug traps as slugs love lettuce and will live in the lettuce plants.
Harvesting Lettuce
You can harvest the loose leaf lettuce as and when you want it by just cutting a few leafs off. For the hearty ones harvest them when it has a good round ball shaped heart in the middle. Do not leave them too long or they will bolt and spoil. You can always give friends and family lettuce if you have too much.
Make sure you wash the lettuce thoroughly before eating as you will find lots of bugs and slugs hiding in them.
