Choosing the best site

When you are choosing the best site and area to grow celeriac in you want somewhere that is in full sun or even partial shade, but full sun is more ideal. You want some soil that is moisture retentive – it is best if you dig in some organic matter to help them, this can be garden compost or well rotted manure

Sowing Celeriac

Celeriac needs to be grown at temperatures of around 15 degrees. Sowing of Celeriac needs to be done in March ideally. This will give the crop plenty of growing time and should get to a good size.

To sow celeriac get a seed tray or modules and fill half way with potting compost. Distribute the seeds around the tray and modules so they are not close together. Then cover with compost. Either put a propagator over the top or cover with cling film to keep them warm and stop anything eating them.

Planting Celeriac

Once the plants have grown to a suitable size for you to handle, ideally to one true leaf. These need transferring to individual pots. Pick the best ones to transfer. Either use plastic plant pots or biodegradable ones which you can then put straight into the ground.

Keep the plants warm and in a greenhouse till the end of Spring or early Summer. These will then be ready to plant outdoors. Before you plant them straight outside harden them off for a couple of week to get used to the weather.

When you plant them outdoors plant the small plants around 40cm apart but make sure they are protected from the slugs and snails, you do not want them destroying your crops that you have spent time growing.

Looking after your Celeriac Plants

Celerica do not need a lot of looking after but they will enjoy a bit of your attention. They will like to have a drink of water every 6-8 days if there is no rain. When it is the middle of summer cut off the lower leaves on the plant so that the sun can get to the flesh. Around the begining of autumn cover the flesh with soil. This will keep them looking white.

Harvesting Celeriac

The time harvest your celeriac is in Autumn through to Spring. It needs to be either the size of a tennis ball up to the size of a small melon. You do not need to pick them all at once. Just pick as and when required.
