When to sow sweet peas

Sweet Peas can be started off nice and early in Autumn when they need growing in compost or my secret tip (watch the video) in somewhere warm, or you can wait till spring and plant them in pots or directly in the soil. We will explain both methods either in soil or my secret tip.

How to sow sweet peas

Method 1 – Sowing in Compost

To sow in compost you need some tall pots, alot of people use empty toilet rolls to plant them in. The sweet peas need to put there roots deep hence why using toilet rolls. Leave them to grow in the toilet rolls in a warm room until the frost has passed. Once they are ready and the frost has passed you can move onto the next step – transplanting.

Method 2 – Secret tip

Watch the video of how I’ve sown my sweet peas.

Once these have grown quite a bit I will then transplant the ones that have taken into compost to grow on.

How to transplant sweetpeas

Around April time and the chance of frost has passed you can now plant them outdoors. First leave them outside to get used to the change in temperature before planting into their final position.

Find a sunny spot where you are going to plant them. Also you need to find somewhere that is easy to pick them. To prepare the ground put some compost in with the soil as they like moist rich soil. If you have not got any soil to plant them in use a trough or a planter to grow them in. They will need support to grow up as they grow like runner beans.

To plant them they need to be planted around 20 cm apart so they can bush out. You can plant two plants in one hole.

Looking after your sweet pea plants

To look after your sweet peas they need quite a bit help along the way. You need to keep tying them to the framework. Aim to do this every 7-10 days. This will provide straighter stems for cutting flowers for your vase.

Keep the plants well watered in warm weather. When the flowers appear keep cutting them off to encourage more the grow. You will be able to have blooms in your house all summer long.
