Choosing the right place

Snapdragons need to be grown in full sun either in your containers or in the ground. Choose a well drained and fertile piece of land.

When to sow

You can sow Snapdragon seeds in two different seasons. You can either sow them in autumn or in early spring in a warm greenhouse. If you do not have a greenhouse you can use a windowsill. If you sow them in Autumn you will get flowers in May.

How to sow

When it comes to sowing the seeds that is the fun bit so get the children involved in it. You need to sow your seeds sparingly on the surface of a tray of compost, water them and place them in a clear bag and tie it or put cling film over the top.

When the plants are big enough to handle transfer them to pots to help build up their roots.

Planting

Once the chance of frost has passed and it’s warmer in a morning you can now plant them outdoors in a sunny spot or in your containers. Continue to look after the plants by watering. They should not need feeding but you can give them a bit of food every every week with a potash fertiliser.

Caring

To care for your snapdragons when you see a flower dying on the plant Deadhead it. This will encourage new flowers to form and create more blooms prolonging the flowering period. If you are growing the taller variety snapdragon give them a helping hand by supporting them with canes or twigs.
