What Are Charlotte Potatoes?

Charlotte is a second early potato variety with smooth yellow skin and pale yellow flesh. It is best known as a salad potato, as it holds its shape well when cooked and has a rich, buttery flavour.

Charlotte potatoes are usually harvested fresh in summer and are not intended for long-term storage.

When to Plant Charlotte Potatoes

In the UK, Charlotte potatoes are typically planted:

  • Late March to early April, once the soil is workable and frost risk has reduced

Chitting seed potatoes before planting helps encourage quicker, stronger growth.

How to Grow Charlotte Potatoes

Soil Preparation

Charlotte potatoes prefer fertile, well-drained soil. Improve soil by digging in well-rotted compost or organic matter before planting.

Planting Depth and Spacing

  • Plant seed potatoes 10–15 cm deep
  • Space plants 30 cm apart
  • Leave 60 cm between rows

Charlotte also grows very well in containers and grow bags.

Earthing Up

As shoots grow, gradually mound soil around the stems. This protects developing tubers from light and helps increase yields.

Watering

Water regularly, especially during dry spells and when tubers are forming. Avoid waterlogging, as Charlotte potatoes dislike very wet soil.

Feeding

A balanced fertiliser or organic feed at planting time supports healthy growth. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leaf growth at the expense of tubers.

Growing Charlotte Potatoes in Containers

Charlotte is ideal for container growing:

  • Use containers at least 40–50 cm deep
  • Fill with free-draining compost
  • Earth up with additional compost as plants grow
  • Water consistently, as containers dry out faster than garden soil

When to Harvest Charlotte Potatoes

Charlotte potatoes are usually ready to harvest 13–15 weeks after planting.

Signs they are ready:

  • Plants are flowering or have just finished flowering
  • Tubers are medium-sized with thin skins

Charlotte potatoes are best harvested fresh and eaten soon after lifting.

How to Harvest Charlotte Potatoes

  • Gently loosen soil with a fork to avoid damaging tubers
  • Lift carefully, as skins are delicate when young
  • Harvest as needed rather than lifting the whole crop at once

Common Problems When Growing Charlotte Potatoes

  • Dry soil can reduce tuber size
  • Slugs may damage tubers in damp conditions
  • Blight risk is lower due to early harvest but still possible in wet summers

Good spacing and airflow help reduce disease risk.

How to Use Charlotte Potatoes

Charlotte potatoes are best suited for:

  • Salads
  • Boiling
  • Steaming
  • Light roasting

They are not ideal for mash, as their waxy texture prevents them breaking down fully.

Why Grow Charlotte Potatoes?

  • Excellent flavour and texture
  • Reliable crops in UK conditions
  • Ideal for beginners
  • Perfect for salads and summer meals
