Best Rotavator For Allotment

Best Rotavator For Allotment

Summer is upon us and what a fantastic Spring we have had in 2020. More and more people are getting into gardening and getting allotments. You still have time to prepare those garden beds and vegetable gardens. It can be back-breaking digging over a garden and allotment so if you can have a machine to help a rotavator or a tiller is the garden tool to purchase. This will help speed up the work and the back-breaking work of bending down all day.

Rotavators or tillers are used on an allotment to help break up the soil and take the hard work and back-breaking that is needed to dig over the planting area in the allotment or in the garden.

Rotavators can come in very handy when it comes to digging in fertilizer and compost. These will help dig it in at ease and mix it in with the soil, saving you bending down and getting close to that smelly job.

Rotavators and tillers can come in different sizes and shapes. At one time they would only be petrol. Rotavators now come in electric and battery operated. Obviously electric is not a common one used on the allotment unless you have a generator so you might as well pick a petrol-powered one as you can just keep topping it up while you are down on the plot. If you have a battery-powered rotavator you will need to take spare batteries with you.

Reviews

Here we have provided one of the reviews from one of the customers which should hopefully help you:-

  • At the price I figured it was worth a purchase. Used the tiller on pre-dug ground and it made an excellent job. Its a small light weight 2-3HP unit so don’t expect it to do the work of a tractor….
  • After 6 months of light use the unit began making a rattle and no rotation of tines, called Burrowmount, they collected it and repaired and back within the week. New gearbox required.
  • Interesting point – the new gearbox has a greasing point on it while the original did not. This is much better – i can remove two screws and periodically pump fresh grease through and push out the old grease.
  • I would not use this tiller on un-dug ground or very heavy ground – its simply not able for that, but you should not find that surprising given the cost and HP involved.

Another nice aspect is the unit is narrow enough to till between my rows of veg which has allowed me do some real rapid weeding at low rpm

Reviews

Here you can see one of the reviews left by the customer on this product which was purchased:-

The disappointments first:
1. It came with a short (about 1′ 4″, 40 cm) power lead fitted with a European plug. factor in an extension lead and either a UK plug or a European socket for the extension lead.
2. The wheels are flimsy. It wobbles when you’re moving it around the garden and it leans to one side.

The good stuff:
It works really well. I had already dug about half of the plot I tested it on but there were still lots of big clods of earth. It went through that easily and created a fine tilth. The rest of the plot was more difficult. I didn’t plant anything in it last year so it hasn’t been dug for a couple of years. The machine struggled until I loosened the ground with a fork. After that it dealt with it with ease.

All in all, I’m happy with it. Minus one star for the disappointments.

Reviews

Here you can find the review from one of the customers which purchased the rotavator:-

A very good battery controlled rotovator I needed a light and easy to control to use on my allotment to till the top soil ready for planting . Have used this machine this week and it was very powerful and after charging the battery a full charge lasted about 25 minutes before stopping which was enough for me to till the soil on one plot size 12ft by 8ft going backwards and forwards several times and really did make the soil much lighter reading for sowing. Have purchased a 4ah battery from another company I found on the internet as Amazon do not stock this size so will have a bigger power backup to use on my other plots.A really good workable machine .The only problem was I could not get the battery to slot into the battery holder as there was two springs inside the holder which prevented the battery being inserted these I eventually removed as they appeared to be for packing the battery I presume was originally included where as now they sell this this separately. The battery then just slides in without any problem this advice may help other purchasers.Hope this review helps

Rotavator Buying Guide

Rotavator Buying Guide

Gardening is a great therapeutic activity that is great for the mind and soul and can help with depression. Some task though can be hard work and you can need a helping hand when it comes to the more laborious tasks including digging over your garden.

Garden rotavators and tillers can come in very handy to take away the hard work of digging over your allotment, garden, or kitchen garden. Soil can be heavy and even in peak fitness, it can be strainful on the body. This is why a lot of people opt for using a garden rotavator or tiller.

On the internet there are many sizes, types, makes, and models of rotavators and it can be a very hard choice when it comes to choosing the best rotavator or the best-valued rotavator and tiller.

It’s always great to look around at products, check reviews ask other allotment holders who have them. It’s always good to use someone else knowledge an experience of a product before you go out and spend a lot of money on an item of garden machinery.

You also need to consider many factors when purchasing a rotavator. These include do you have electric to plug it in? Can you store it somewhere safe. If you are taking it home from the allotment will it fit in the car also is it light enough to lift into the car and maneuver about. You also need to look at what soil it will be working in. Is it clay or normal standard soil.

What to look for in a rotavator

When it comes to looking for a rotavator there are some key main aspects to look out for. Go through the checklist below to make sure you have thought of everything before purchasing.

  • If it is an electric rotavator is the wire orange? This might sound basic but if it is black it might be hard to see if in the soil and you may cut through it electrocuting yourself.
  • Look at the size of the fuel tank on a rotavator. If your garden is big you will have to keep filling it up.
  • If you are buying a battery powered one for the allotment have a look at how long the battery will last for so you know if it will last for the area on the plot.
  • Check the handles – do they fold in half so you can store it away easy and to fit it in the car. Do they have padding on as this will take some of the relief and strain from pushing it.
  • Is there a safety cut out switch on it? You don’t want to end up burning the motor out and have to get it replaced or pay to have the rotavator fixed.

Safety Notice for rotavators and tillers

There are many things you need to do to stay safe when using a rotavator. These are:-

  • Never use the rotavator or tiller on your own down on an allotment or an empty house. If you were to have an injury you would need help and assistance. Make sure someone is near you watching you.
  • Wear protective shoes, these need to be steel capped. This is because once the rotavator is running it can move all over the place. The last thing you want is to be going to hospital.
  • Get some ear defenders. Rotavators are very noisy when they are up and running especially petrol ones. you do not want to be causing any damage to your hearing.
  • Eye and face protection. Make sure this is warn as rotavators can chuck up stones or twigs at a fast speed and if one of those goes in your eyes or hits your face you will know about it.
  • Thick gardening gloves need to be worn, again this can be from stones and debris been chucked up into the air. plus it will protect you from getting cuts and blisters.
  • Make sure the area of the plot is clear of tools and anything on the ground. You do not want to be falling over a rake or some wood while running the rotavator and tiller.
  • First aid kit – always have a first aid kit on your allotment or to hand just in case you need it and that all the items are in date.

Before using the rotavator should I remove the weeds

Before you use a rotavator you should dig the weeds out. A lot of people when they take on an allotment just go out and hire a rotavator or a tiller and rotavate the whole plot. It will look great after doing it but all the roots of those weeds will have been chopped up into thousands and millions more roots. These will all grow back making it a bigger job in the future.

How to use a rotavator

When purchasing a rotavator you want to find one that is either already put together or the instructions are clear enough to do it yourself easily.

If you are purchasing a petrol rotavator make sure you check the fuel that is needed to operate it. Obviously putting the wrong fuel type in can break it or damage it..

Do not let children use the rotavator leave it to an adult that is capable of using the machinery. the rotavator can bounce around a bit when using it so make sure you have clothing that is not loos or anything that can get tangled up in it.

Choosing the day wisely to use the rotavator

Think about the day when using the rotavator because if the weather has been wet the soil will be clumpy and will stick to the rotavator. If it has been hot weather this can affect it also as the soil will be like a solid rock so will struggle to get through it this will then cause it to overheat and cut out and worst-case scenario it could burn the motor out. Even the best rotavator or tiller will struggle to get through rock solid soil.

Final thought of rotavators

When going out to choose a rotavator or a tiller you are investing in a piece of garden machinery that you want to last a long time. It is good to spend wisely when purchasing machinery. Check your warranty, get the machine service every year or two years in winter. Look after your rotavator clean it down after using it so it does not rust. Store it somewhere that is not damp or will get stolen.

The rotavator I would go for is a petrol rotavator they are commonly more reliable and sturdy. You know that the battery will not cut out after half an hour on a battery-operated rotavator or tiller and that the lead will only go so far if it is an electric rotavator.

Make sure you know what soil you are working with and if the machine will be capable of doing it. If you have a friend that has one why not try theres out on your plot or garden.

Make sure you have all the safety equipment to use the machinery. Don’t think to yourself that you will save some money by not purchasing it. You don’t want to be losing an eye from a stone chipping up and hitting you.

Lastly, remember to only use a rotavator if someone else is around near you. Do not operate machinery if you are on your own or if you have been drinking alcohol
