  • This lopper has a non-optional ratchet mechanism so it requires multiple pulls to close, then release to fully open again, then repeat the cycle. Far too fiddly for thinner branches but enables you to cut thick ones in several pulls, that would almost certainly defeat most people otherwise. So for anything up to an inch – maybe even more – of hard wood stem, this is what you need. I was able to cut all the rising stems of ivy growing up my house, after which the foliage all died and was much easier to remove. The degree of extensability of the handles was very useful too for this job. Built like a tank and quite heavy to hold, and hard on the arms & back … but you won’t need to use it often. When you do need it, it’s gold dust. Get a decent ordinary lopper for the half inch or thinner stems and more frequent use.
