This is an excellent well-made product that fits together well and should give years of service. The quality and finish is well above average, and is made of aluminium, won’t rust in the greenhouse. The instructions are pretty basic, with just a few pictures to guide you, but if like me you were brought up assembling Meccano as a child, shouldn’t present a problem as long as you study the pictures before assembly and have the right tools to hand.
There are no tools supplied, so you will need a small 8mm spanner (or ideally two) but if you want to speed things up, an 8mm nut spinner on the end of an electric drill makes life so much easier. If you are not using a drill, be prepared to spend ages tightening the nuts and bolts! There are lots of them.
Tighten everything up finger tight first to make sure everything goes together, before doing the final tightening of all the nuts and bolts.
The instructions show the shelves being assembled first, but as per the picture leave the end cross bits off until last, as otherwise, you won’t be able to tighten the nuts hidden underneath them.
I made up the bottom shelf first, then attached the four legs, then made up the top shelf next and attached that, before fitting the corner struts at 45 degrees and the two end bracing bars.
Once I was happy everything was in place, I tightened all the nuts and bolts, using my 8mm spanner on the nut and my handheld battery drill with the torque setting low, to tighten the bolts from the other side.
Take careful note of where the holes are in the various parts of metal in the illustration. The diagrams are spot on, and if you pay attention to those pictures, everything will fit the first time.
So good luck and enjoy this product. It took me around 90 minutes to assemble, and I’m very pleased with it. It’s now in the greenhouse and being used to store lots of plants for the coming winter period.

I have tried to cut a few small branches with the shears and they seem sharp enough to deal with most twigs, stems etc. The claw gloves are medium sized but stretchy so should fit most hands and seem strong enough to last a season or two.

I’m not a gardener and wasn’t sure what type to get after breaking my old cheap pair till I viewed the video. It was delivered yesterday in a nice securely wrapped package and my first thoughts were this looks good, upon opening it I tried to cut the cardboard that it had been secured to and see how sharp it was and I must admit I was a little bit disappointed that it didn’t cut it. I then went out and tried cutting a side branch on the tree I’m felling and blimey it cut through 1/2″ branch like a hot knife through butter with hardly any effort on my hands which is good as I have arthritis. I tried up to 3/4″ and it cuts it ok but as it’s probably not made for that dia I didn’t want to break it. This is a lovely tool and feels nice and secure in your hand I’m well impressed with the quality and how easy it is to cut branches top marks would recommend.

This is an excellent quality set of tool for the garden. Spear & Jackson are a long-established manufacturer of garden tools and without a shadow of a doubt these are well made tools, more importantly they are reasonably priced.

This is nice and light for carting down to the shed and packing away. It also does a good cut and the engine is just a bit more powerful than the lower models, so the blades don’t get so affected by thicker grass or if it’s a bit damp. The engine keeps going at its regular speed.

How to sow butternut squash.

When sowing butternut squash seeds you are best sowing these indoors or in a greenhouse. The reason for this is that they need the warmth to help them germinate. If you are planning on sowing outdoors you will need to wait till the soil warms up – this is using valuable growing time. Like I mentioned above it takes around 120 days for the butternut squash to be fully grown ready to harvest. So the quicker you start them growing the longer you have before the cold comes.

When it comes to sowing butternut squash in the greenhouse, it is pretty easy. The best way to do it and a hassle-free way are to plant one squash seed in a medium-sized plant pot. The reason for this is if you plant them into seed trays you will only have to transplant them to grow them bigger. IF you are growing them straight in the plant pots you don’t need to touch them until you move them outdoors. Once you have planted your seeds you can cover the pots with some cling film to keep the moisture in and to help the soil keep warm which will germinate the butternut squash seeds.

How to plant Butternut Squash

When your squash plants have germinated and are of a great size and any chance of frost has passed you can now plant them outdoors. Do not plant them outdoors if the chance of frost is still around as this will kill the plants off.

When planting your squash outdoors you need a big area to grow them as the vines can reach from between 15ft to 20ft. Your other option is to grow them up a frame so they don’t take up as much space on the ground.

To plant your butternut squash dig a hole a spade deep. Add some compost, well rotted manure and some fertilizer to the hole. Now you can plant your butternut squash in the hole. Fill in the rest of the hole with the remaining soil.

How to look after your squash plants

Looking after your butternut squash is vital to getting great results and fantastic harvest from the vines on the butternut squash plants.

Feeding your squash is vital for bumper crops. When you start to see the squash set and start to swell feed them with a high potash liquid fertilizer. Do this every ten days. This will certainly help give them a great crop.

Weeding is the next important thing that needs doing. If you notice any weeds growing around the squash plants remove them immediately – do not let the weeds grow as they can take all the nutrients and water from the soil that the butternut squash plant needs to grow. Weeding the butternut squash should ideally be done by hand as you do not want to damage the roots growing on the plant, these are not very deep on the plant so can easily be damaged with a hoe.

The most important thing for the butternut squash growing is watering the plant. It is not a simple case of watering the squash plant. When watering the butternut squash plant you need to be doing this around 3-4 times a week especially in hot weather. It is good to keep the soil damp. You need to be careful that you don’t water the stem of the plant or the leaves. Watering the stem could cause it to rot and the butternut squash plant could snap and die. Do not get water on the leaves as this can cause the powdery mildew that you see on plants. The best way to water butternut squash plants is to sink a plant pot with holes in at the side of the plant and water into that. This way the water will go straight to the roots and not to the stem or on the leaves.

Knowing when to harvest your butternut squash is important as picking it too early can be bad and if you leave it too long you may expose it to frost. Here we will talk about when the best time is to harvest your butternut squash.

One of the telltale signs to knowing if your squash is ready is checking the colour of the squash. When it is growing the butternut squash will be a light green in colour. You are waiting for it to go an orange/yellow in colour this will be the give away sign that it is ready. You can also feel the squash. If the butternut squash is hard and firm that will also tell you it is ready.

Plant dying

If the vine that the squash is dying that means the butternut squash will not grow any more. Hopefully, it will have changed colour before the vine fully dies.

Cold weather

Like we mentioned above if the weather is turning cold you need to pick the butternut squash before the frost comes. This can really damage the squash if not picked before. The plant will not survive the cold weather and it will most likely kill the plant off.

If the weather is getting wet put the squash on top of something like hay, straw or on a brick. You do not want it resting on the soil as the slugs will find it. Also, the wet soil will cause the butternut squash to rot.
