When to harvest radishes
There are many types of radishes from red, white and purple. Plus radishes come in lots of different shapes. It is good to know the type and variety of radish you are growing. This will give you an insight into when your radishes will be ready and how long it takes to grow until the radish are ready to harvest.
The radishes that you would normally see in shops usually take around only 4 weeks from planting the seed outside to it being ready to harvest. The best way to check is just pull one of the radishes out of the ground and you will see the size of it. All the other radishes will be the same size if they were all planted at the same time. Don’t plant loads of seeds at once as you will be harvesting loads of Radish. Once they are ready they need to come out or the radish will go to seed. This is when you see flowers growing on top of it – this can mean the radish is past it.
So the best thing to remember is that yo check if they are ready just pull one out and check the size. Sometimes you can tell the size of the radish on top of the soil.
How to prepare Radish
Once you have harvested you radish you will want to prepare them this is actually quite easy. First, cut the leaves off the top of the radish then trim the roots off the bottom. Wash all the dirt off them thoroughly and dry them well or they may go mouldy and rot. They can be then stored in the fridge in a plastic bag until they are ready to be used. You can also eat the radish leaves that you cut off. So wash them and also store them in a bag in the fridge. These can be stored up to 3 days at the most.
