  • We have been growing our own vegetables in raised beds for the last 2 years. We live in the west of Scotland and have less sun and more rain. We don’t have a glass house to grow seedlings. We’ve learnt alot over this time and alot of it has been learnt by trial and error. Previous books provide some guidance, so do experienced friends and of course…Monty :)! We think this book adds alot to our basic information because we are not greenfingers in any shape or form! Sometimes you do need something to be a bit prescriptive and tell you exactly what to do, WHEN to do it and in what order. This is what this book is good for. It appreciates that lots of us are city folkies with limited space but wanting to do the best with what we have. We’ve had pretty good crops of beans, peas, kale, spinach, salad leaves, carrots, onions, garlic, chives, courgettes, potatoes, blueberries and raspberries this season but we’re looking forward to next year with a much better plan in our heads! Reviews of the book:-

This gardening book has an average rating of 4.8 out of 5. It has a 5* percentage of 82% from over 450 purchases. It is a very popular book for gardeners. Here is what some of the purchases have said about the book:-

  • As a new veg grower (spinach, lettuce, radish basil & spring onions, since lockdown) with a small garden, I just wanted some pointers at what and how to grow a bit of veg in the small area that I had. After receiving the book I found a nice shady spot to sit in the garden with a cup of tea and became totally submerged in this easy to follow book. It became apparent that my small space was ideal for growing an abundance and variety of veg on every aspect – even north facing! I can’t wait to pop some runner beans and sweetcorn in amongst my flowers and shrubs, and am looking into vertical growing for the south facing garage wall, which currently is bare and unsightly. I’m going to repurpose large TK Max bags for growing potatoes and am hunting out anything that will hold soil to plant in. The book is a nice size to handle – not too big, and the cover is colourful and designed beautifully. The font and layout is easy to follow – just wish the contents list of veg at the beginning was in alphabetical order, but that’s not too much of a problem really. Glad I purchased this book, and together with Veg in One Bed that I have on order, my garden will hopefully soon be transformed!

  • I recently moved house, and have inherited a large area that the last owners used to grow their own fruits and veggies. I’ve had experience growing flowers in the past, but had no idea about growing vegetables or fruits (apart from blackberries on a rather unruly bush at my old home!). Anyway, this book has been a God send. It explains EVERYTHING you need to know (and quite a bit I don’t need to know just yet, such as poly tunnel growing). It’s set out in a very simple to understand format, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to grow their own food.

I bought this book based on the amazing reviews and when it arrived I did like the cover, size, pictures, but when I leafed through it I thought, well another book for my bookcase. Because it gives mainly tips for beginners and since I have been growing things on my terrace for some time now I thought I knew all of it.

Well, the book proved me wrong. When you go through the obvious tips, you discover that there are many other “minor” tips that I have never read about in books before (and believe me, I have quite a few books at home and also keep browsing the internet for some useful tips).

And what is more, some of the “hidden” tips make perfect sense and I am just wondering why no one has even told me before.

To sum it up – a lovely book that is useful for beginners as well for more experienced terrace gardeners. The best book of this sort that I own now
