Sweet Potato Base

  • 1 kg sweet potatoes
  • 60 g butter, melted
  • 80 g brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 120 ml milk or cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt

Topping (Choose One)

Crunchy Pecan Topping

  • 80 g brown sugar
  • 40 g plain flour
  • 60 g butter, softened
  • 60 g chopped pecans

OR Classic Marshmallow Topping

  • 150–200 g marshmallows

  • 180°C (160°C fan)

⏱️ How to Make Sweet Potato Casserole

Step 1: Cook the Sweet Potatoes

  1. Peel and chop sweet potatoes
  2. Boil in salted water for 15–20 minutes until very tender
  3. Drain well and allow steam to escape

Step 2: Make the Sweet Potato Base

  1. Mash sweet potatoes until smooth
  2. Mix in butter, sugar, eggs, milk, vanilla, spices, and salt
  3. Beat until creamy and evenly combined

Step 3: Assemble

  1. Spread sweet potato mixture evenly into a greased baking dish
  2. Prepare topping of choice

For pecan topping:
Rub all topping ingredients together until crumbly, then sprinkle evenly

For marshmallow topping:
Add marshmallows during the final 10 minutes of baking


Step 4: Bake

  • Bake uncovered for 30–35 minutes
  • Add marshmallows (if using) and return to oven for 10 minutes
  • Top should be lightly golden and set
