📏 When Is the Best Time to Lay Turf?

Turf can be laid almost any time of year when the ground isn’t frozen or waterlogged, but the best results come from:

  • Spring – good moisture levels and active growth
  • Autumn – warm soil, cooler air, and less stress

Avoid laying turf during extreme heat, drought, or frost.

🧹 Step 1: Prepare the Ground Properly

Preparation is the most important part of laying turf.

  • Remove all weeds, stones, and debris
  • Dig over the soil to a depth of 15–20cm
  • Break up clumps and rake level
  • Firm lightly by treading or rolling

The surface should be flat, firm, and free-draining, not compacted or loose.

🌱 Step 2: Improve the Soil

Before laying turf:

  • Add topsoil if required
  • Rake in a suitable pre-turf fertiliser if recommended
  • Level carefully, allowing for turf thickness

Finish with soil about 2–3cm below paths or edging.

📦 Step 3: Lay the Turf

Lay turf as soon as possible after delivery.

  • Start along a straight edge
  • Lay in a brickwork pattern to stagger joints
  • Butt edges tightly together without overlapping
  • Avoid stretching the turf

Use boards to stand or kneel on to avoid sinking the soil.

✂️ Step 4: Trim and Press Down

  • Trim edges neatly with a sharp knife
  • Check for gaps and close them
  • Press turf down gently to ensure soil contact

Good contact helps roots establish quickly.

💧 Step 5: Water Thoroughly

Watering is essential for success.

  • Water immediately after laying
  • Soak deeply so moisture reaches the soil below
  • Water daily for the first 2 weeks

Check underneath occasionally to ensure soil remains moist.

🚫 Step 6: Keep Off New Turf

  • Avoid walking on turf for 2–3 weeks
  • Do not mow until turf has rooted
  • First mow should be light with sharp blades

Rooting usually begins within 10–14 days.

❌ Common Turf-Laying Mistakes

🚫 Laying turf on dry or compacted ground
🚫 Leaving gaps between rolls
🚫 Insufficient watering
🚫 Walking on turf too soon
🚫 Leaving turf rolled up too long

Most turf problems come from poor preparation or aftercare.

🌟 Final Thoughts

Learning how to lay turf properly ensures a strong, even lawn that lasts. Take time to prepare the ground, lay turf promptly, water well, and keep off until established. Do it right once and enjoy the results for years.
