🥕🟡 1. Ingredients
- 1 large swede, peeled and cubed
- 4–5 medium carrots, peeled and sliced
- 25–50g butter
- Salt & pepper
- Optional extras: honey, mustard, cream, nutmeg, white pepper, thyme
🥣🔥 2. The Perfect Swede-to-Carrot Ratio
For the best texture and flavour:
⭐ 2 parts swede : 1 part carrot
This gives:
✔ the sweetness of carrots
✔ the creaminess of swede
✔ a balanced, vibrant mash
If you prefer it sweeter, increase the carrot amount.
🍲🕒 3. How to Cook the Swede & Carrots
You can boil or steam. Steaming keeps flavours stronger.
🥘 Boiling Method
- Place swede and carrots in a pan.
- Cover with cold, salted water.
- Boil for:
- Swede: 30–40 minutes
- Carrots: 15–20 minutes
- Test with a knife — both should be very soft.
- Drain well.
🌫️ Steaming Method (Best for Texture)
- Add swede to the steamer first – steam for 15 minutes.
- Add carrots and steam together for another 25–30 minutes.
- Remove once fully tender.
🧈🥄 4. How to Mash for Perfect Texture
Once drained, return veg to the warm pan to dry for 2 minutes.
Then:
- Add butter.
- Season with salt & pepper.
- Mash until smooth.
- Add optional flavourings if desired.
For extra-smooth mash, finish with a hand blender.
